Lesson 5I. Objectives
· NCSS Curriculum Standards: Civic Ideals and Practices · Social Studies - Civics SOL 2.10: The student will explain the responsibilities of a good citizen, with emphasis on c) describing actions that can improve the school and community · Fine Arts - Visual Communication and Production SOL 2.8: The student will collaborate with others to create a work of art · Students will create a poster describing a local problem and action steps that they might take to solve these problems. II. Materials for Learning Activities · Teacher: Grouping for Projects, Rubric, YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWnc0OWNENk&playnext=1&list=PL30AC135B1FD2BF8A&feature=results_main · Students: Poster board, markers, rubric III. Procedures for Learning Activities · Introduction – COLLECT DONATIONS. Tell students that you are very excited about the many topics that they chose to write their letters about and you have put them into groups based on their topics. Tell students that you have ANOTHER example of a child making a difference as you play the YouTube video. Whole group – 5 minutes · Instructional strategies – Tell the students that they are going to be working with some of their peers to create a poster that describes the certain action they choose to improve the school or community. Hand out a rubric to each student and read over the required components. Read the groupings to the students and allow them to find their group members. Allow as much time as possible for students to work on their posters. Partners/Groups – 30 minutes · Summary – Tell students that as the week progresses, we will share one poster a day until all groups have had the chance to present. Then we will hang out posters around the school for others to view. Whole group – 5 minutes IV. Assessment · Students will be assessed based on a rubric. A copy of the rubric will be given to the students before they complete their poster. V. Differentiation and Accommodations Differentiation · Advanced students: The rubric allows for any “additional information” to be added by students. · Struggling students: Within their group, they will be given specific instances in which they can contribute, e.g. come up with one reason for choosing problem and write on poster. · Multiple levels of learners intended to help balance group. Accommodations · ADHD student: Student will be placed within a group whose members will be less of a distraction than others. VI.
